Dr. Joseph Owen Foohey M.D., L.M.C.C., K.S.G.
Our dear father passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday August 7th, 2016. He was predeceased by his loving wife Margaret M. F. Hickson and his son Brian. He leaves behind his children David Foohey, Pembroke; Robert Foohey (Deborah), Renfrew; Sheila Ryan (Gerard), Pembroke; and Karen Foohey, Pembroke. Loving grandfather to Dr. Sarah Foohey, Kathryn Ryan and Shane Ryan.

Dr. Foohey was born in Saint John, N.B, the son of the late David and Agnes (Owens) Foohey. He was educated at St Vincent’s and Saint John High School and Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. Dr. Foohey then graduated from Laval University School of Medicine and received the Lieutenant-Governor’s Award for the province of Quebec.
After several years of post- graduate study in the United States, he began practice in Pembroke in 1949. He then spent two years completing post-graduate study in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Rotunda in Dublin, Ireland and at St. Mary’s University in Manchester, England. During his career in Pembroke as a General Practitioner and Obstetrician, Dr. Foohey delivered approximately 5000 babies and served as the Chief of Obstetrics to both the Pembroke Civic and Pembroke Regional Hospitals. In later years, Dr. Foohey looked after many elderly patients at Lorrain Clinic, Marianhill and Pinewood. He considered this one of the most rewarding periods of his medical career.
Dr. Foohey was also deeply interested in education. He spent a few years teaching before entering medical school. He served on both the Renfrew County Separate and Public School Boards, acting as Chairman for the Public Board for a term. He also served as Chairman of the Lorrain School of Nursing for many years and was on the Board of Governors of Algonquin College for seven years. Dr. Foohey had the privilege of being made a Knight of St. Gregory the Great for which he was recommended by the late Bishop, J.R. Windle – an honor he greatly appreciated. In the year 2000, Dr. Foohey received the Glenn Sawyer Award from the Ontario Medical Association and was a senior member of both the Ontario and Canadian Medical Associations.
